Columbia Gorge River Hotels - Skamania Lodge

Welcome to the Columbia River Gorge National Scenic Area! The Scenic Area was created with two main purposes: To protect and enhance the scenic, natural, cultural and recreational resource of the Gorge; and to protect and support the economy of the Gorge.

The Gorge is a place of incredible beauty and diversity. It is the only sea-level passage through the Cascade Mountain Range and has a rich cultural history spanning over 10,000 years.

Through a unique public-private partnership, the USDA Forest Service has an Information Center in the main lobby of Skamania Lodge which affords guests and visitors the opportunity to explore all facets of the Columbia Gorge. Whether you are looking for a hike, to find one of the 15 endemic wildflower species or explore the 40 million years of geologic history, this is the place to start your journey. We provide maps, directions, interpretive information and sales items to help you in your endeavors.

Outdoor Activities in the Columbia River Gorge

The Columbia River Gorge is truly an outdoor year-round playground.

The Gorge is famous for its falls — 77 on the Oregon side alone. The most well known is Multnomah Falls, is 620 feet and is the fifth largest waterfall in the United States. At Multnomah Falls, you will find hiking paths, a USDA Forest Service Information Center and a quaint restaurant.

The Gorge and local rivers are well known for great windsurfing, whitewater rafting, kayaking and fishing for Salmon, Steelhead & Sturgeon. Bicycle riding is another favorite activity in the area. If you are a winter sports enthusiast, you find an array of snowshoeing, cross country skiing and downhill skiing and snowboarding on Mt. Hood.

If your definition of adventure is more relaxing, then we suggest the following activities: beautiful and relaxing cruises on the Columbia Gorge Sternwheeler, a ride through the Hood River Valley aboard the Mount Hood Railroad. Or, enjoy a leisurely afternoon by visiting one of Gorge's wineries or breweries or museums. The Columbia Gorge Interpretive Center provides a fascinating display of local history and Native American artifacts and is located just across the street from the Lodge.
