Romantic Skamania Lodge Storyphoto

Skamania Lodge has a unique place in our relationship history. On our first official date in September of 2001, Michael and I took a drive in the Gorge. He explained he’d heard about a place called Skamania Lodge and that he would like to visit there someday. Three months later, I surprised Michael with a trip to Skamania. It was our very first getaway together as a couple.

To be at the lodge during Christmastime was extra special. We loved the beautiful tree and the calm ambiance. After this first getaway, we returned to the lodge every few months. The lodge gained more significance in our lives when Michael was deployed to Iraq with the Oregon National Guard. Whenever he’d come home on leave, we’d escape to the lodge. It was always one place the war never touched us.

When Michael returned back home in 2005, I expected a proposal. Sadly, that didn’t come. Michael moved back to his hometown in Wisconsin to care for an ailing family member. With family and a career in the northwest, moving to Wisconsin wasn’t an option for me. We ended our relationship. Well, that didn’t last for long. We both realized what we had and didn’t want to lose one another.

In October of 2009, I invited my mom to join me for a “girls weekend” at the lodge. We signed up for your fall wedding open house, where we could sample food, drinks and meet vendors. When we arrived at the lodge Saturday morning, I was stunned to find Michael in front of your fireplace. He got down on one knee and proposed in front of me, my family, his son, our close friends, and about 30 guests! Six months later, in March of 2010, we married at the lodge on the first day of spring.

Lucky for us, the weather cooperated. It rained the day before, it rained the day after, but on our special day the sun shone bright. During our wedding ceremony, we told the story of how we met and how special Skamania is to us. We were thrilled to share the lodge with all of our family and friends. As long as Skamania is open, we’ll be loyal guests. To us, it’s a second home. ☺
