Columbia River Gorge Blog
The baking of gingerbread houses has long been a Christmas holiday tradition. At Skamania Lodge in the heart of Columbia River Gorge – 45 minutes from Portland, Oregon, we have an annual tradition of creating a holiday gingerbread house for our guests, local residents and employees to enjoy.
The gingerbread house became popular in Germany after the Brothers Grimm published their fairy tale collection which included "Hansel and Gretel" in the 19th century. Early German settlers brought this lebkuchenhaeusle - gingerbread house - tradition to the Americas.
If you would like to create your own Gingerbread house, join on Saturday December 14th and 21st for our Gingerbread House Building class from 10 AM until 2 PM. Truly a delight for everyone, Chef Wallace and our culinary staff will be on hand to help guests create a colorful house or cookie. Materials: $30 for Gingerbread Houses, $20 for Cookies. Reservations are required and can be made by calling 509-427-7700.
This lodge is one of the friendliest places I know. Everyone seems to genuinely enjoy working there and doing whatever they can to assist the guests.
