BIRDS OF PREY PROGRAM THRILLS GUESTS AND VISITORS AT SKAMANIA LODGE

With the beautiful Columbia River Gorge as a backdrop, guests and visitors to Skamania Lodge can get “up close and personal” with some of the most magnificent birds in the world and learn about the important role they play in the environment. This crowd-pleasing event has taken place every weekend this summer and will culminate with four shows on Labor Day weekend. “For most of our guests and visitors, this is a once-in-a-lifetime experience and always draws a huge crowd to our Grand Lawn,” said Skamania Lodge General Manager Scott Spann. “It’s not often that you get to look an owl in the eyes, be inches away from a bald eagle and see a falcon in flight.” This is the second year the Lodge has offered the Birds of Prey Program. Guests and day visitors are invited to the Grand Lawn of the Lodge to learn the natural history, stewardship and the importance of these amazing creatures in the environment. Volunteers from the Raptor House Rehab Center in Yakima, Wash., captivate audiences with up to eight different raptors, including a Bald Eagle, Barn Owl and a Ferruginous Hawk. Raptor House is a nonprofit company that rescues injured wild birds and returns them to the wild. Over the Labor Day weekend, show times are scheduled for: 5 p.m. on Friday; 11 a.m. and 5:30 p.m. Saturday; and 12 p.m. Sunday. It is advised that attendees check the Lodges’ weekly newsletter available at the Lodge for official times beforehand. The Birds of Prey Program is one of many outdoor activities guests can experience while staying at the Lodge, which is situated in the heart of the Columbia Gorge National Scenic Area. There are a multitude of sporting and recreational activities that can be enjoyed right on the     Lodge property such as tennis, basketball, volleyball, croquet, biking and hiking. For those who want to experience the natural wonders of the Columbia Gorge, offsite adventures can be arranged through the Lodge’s concierge. These include white water rafting, hiking, climbing, biking, windsurfing, kayaking, fishing and Sternwheeler cruises on the Columbia River. During the winter months, the Lodge can arrange for guests to go downhill skiing, snowshoeing and cross country skiing. Can you Control the Weather?

If you can, I’d REALLY like to be your friend! Let’s face it - weather in the Pacific Northwest is very quick to change and keeps you on your toes. We don’t ever quite know what we’re going to get. If you are someone whose entire wedding will be ruined by rain, wind, a low flying airplane, a train’s whistle, a flyby of honking geese, cold temperatures, or a myriad of other outdoor occurrences then an outdoor ceremony or reception isn’t a good choice for you. If you can roll with the punches and understand that no one can control the weather or completely control an outdoor environment (and consequently none of your vendors are to blame if it’s raining, too hot, a car horn honks, etc.) then considering an outdoor event or portion of your event can be a great option.
