You've said "YES" and the planning is in full swing. With weddings comes speeches. The Best Man, the parents, childhood friends, the siblings - there are always a host of people who will want to give a speech at the wedding. And because it is your wedding, you want to make sure they deliver polished, poignant and professional speeches. It is not overstepping to provide some guidance before the big day.
Here are a few tips to pass along:
- Write it down – Let’s face it, most people can’t easily “wing it” when it comes to public speaking. Writing the speech down ahead of time helps focus thoughts and ideas, and helps the speaker more clearly deliver a great story. They shouldn’t read their speech from paper, but by writing it down first, they will have a better chance at communicating a wonderful message.
- Practice – Practicing a speech is surprisingly effective. Simply standing in front of a mirror and reciting the speech over and over again helps the presenter get a better sense for things like flow, tone and pace. Once they are done practicing alone, have a friend or family member listen to the speech and give critical feedback. This process helps polish the speech so that when the time comes, they will look like a pro.
- Have a clear story – People like to listen to stories. They have a hard time following a speech that communicates lots of seemingly unrelated pieces of information. When writing a speech, make sure to develop a plot and stick to it. And always finish strongly with some sort of climax – whether it be a punch line to a joke or the end of a chapter. If you give people a story they can follow and relate to, the audience will love every minute.
The bride and groom will likely know who will be interested in giving a speech at the wedding. Make sure to plan in time for these speeches and then provide speakers with the above guidelines. It can be as simple as creating nicely decorated cards using wedding colors that quickly bullet out the above tips.
