Frozen Waterfalls in the Gorge

When winter temps dip below freezing, the Gorge’s waterfalls turn into sparkling ice sculptures—perfect for a magical day trip.

Top Spots:

  1. Multnomah Falls – Iconic 620-ft cascade, stunning when frosted with ice. Lower viewpoint is easiest; Benson Bridge can be icy.
  2. Latourell & Horsetail Falls – Quick stops with short, scenic walks.
  3. Wahclella Falls – 1.8-mile roundtrip canyon hike to a 60-ft frozen plunge.

Tips for Visiting:

  1. Go right after a cold snap for the best ice.
  2. Wear warm, waterproof layers and sturdy boots with microspikes or traction grips.
  3. Hiking poles help on slick trails.
  4. Check weather and road conditions before heading out.

From Skamania Lodge: Most falls are 30–45 minutes away along the Historic Columbia River Highway or I-84.
